The Mathe-Lite Adult and Child Workshops

The MatheLite Project's (AAC) Adult And Child Mathematics Workshops™ may be conducted by any of the Project's collaborating organizations, following published Guidelines provided by the Project's Mathematical Fitness Clinic. The workshops are "intern" programs in how adults can "math coach" children. Of course, any organization may conduct a math workshop as it sees fit ... but to call it "a MatheLite AAC Math Workshop" requires assurance that the workshops conform to Project guidelines

Each AAC Workshop is for several AAC teams, and focuses on one particular mathematical topic (such as "counting in fractions") ... or on a family of closely related topics (as with "kitchen fractions"). Each team works at its own "kitchen table", using workshop-provided instructional tools that are easily accessible for most homes.

Each Workshop team consists of one adult and one or two children, and remains intact throughout the duration of that workshop. If the adult is not a custodial parent of each child, then that adult must provide written consent/agreements from custodial parents. The number of teams in a Workshop may vary according to the capacities of the conducting organization. The Workshop might meet for only a single session, or for a series of sessions ... depending on the mathematics to be covered. All AAC Math Workshops™ center around MatheLite Activity Guides.

The primary purposes of the AAC Workshops are: (1) to accelerate the community impact of the MatheLite video library, and (2) to provide feedback into the Project's video development activities, for continually improving the videos and the library program services.

The Project's Demonstration AAC Workshops are conducted exclusively by the Project's Mathematical Fitness Clinic. The Clinic uses those workshops as laboratory means of test-piloting the MatheLite Activity Guides ... and for developing the Project's Guidelines for AAC Workshops. These workshop sessions typically consist of 90-minute sessions for 6-10 teams. If a Workshop uses more than one session, sessions meet twice each week.

All persons participating in the Demonstration workshops do so on full scholarships. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of needs, adult's potentials for assisting others, and agreements to cooperate with the Project's efforts to develop its video Activity Guides.

The MatheLite Project's AAC Math Workshop program is an adaptation of a similar "coaching internship" program earlier conducted by the MALEI Mathematical Learning Clinic ... as Parent-And-Child Math Workshops ... through the Continuing Education Program of Tulsa Community College.
